How can I start a community FM radio station, and what are the minimum equipment I would need plus cost?
I am interested in setting up a community FM radio station to address social issues in Nigeria. I operate a mushroom NGO and would need to get across to the people more often. I don't know the equipment I would need for the FM radio station just like I don't have the experience to set up. I need assistance on how to start a cheap one, and the easy-to-use equipment I would need to set up a functional one. I've searched for some information on the internet, but I'm not satisfied with what I got.

- I'd use a Shoutcast server to get urself running... Free to use and set up..
- there is no such thing as a cheap one. an rsl (resricted service license) will cost a few thousand pounds, you need advertising to support you. also you need to know whether the radio authority are handing out licenses in your area. you equiptment will also cost you dearly. there is no running on a shoestring here. THATS FOR FM RADIO NOT INTERNET dont go pirate, iused to do it and it dont work. (prison or hefty fine in the thousands) :-)
- I actually built it using circuit from site http://www.electronics-lab.com/ it works for a small around 1KM which is good to start with. In our country it cost me around US $7 U need a liscence if you want to extend the range the range can be increased by using RF amplfier
- You need thousands of pounds of equipment. You are waisting your time since the digital switchover when we get rid of FM radio and have to pick it up via DAB radio. Also there aren't any spare frequencies in this countries because they would interfere with the signal with popular stations. After the digital switchover I think it will be a lot easier to start up a radios station. Don't know about where you live all I know in London it is 2012.
- wow...hm...ok. I'm not sure what the broadcasting laws in Nigeria are, but in a america is very very hard to set up a station because of FCC forms and it takes a lot of time. Equipment can be expensive, you would need a building, a radio tower/transmitter, mics, and sound boards ect. and some people to help you out. This sound like a great idea and if you can do it...go for it.... read this first and scroll down to broadcast media. -Just keep that in mind. oh! maybe you can contact another radio station for advice on how to get started. You may also be able to rent tower space from them. (that means that several stations can broadcast from the same tower) GOOD LUCK!!!!! http://www.pressreference.com/Ma-No/Nigeria.html
